YOUTH/CHILDREN'S PROGRAM

WHAT WE TEACH

The Meng's Tiger Dragon curriculum is deeply rooted in Shaolin. Children at Meng's Tiger Dragon learn to develop and hone the Shaolin Wing Chun life skills of self-control, focus, respect, self-confidence, and self-discipline. These skills are not merely ideas that a student may or may not pick up during practice, but rather, are the concrete life skills we work towards using physical martial arts as the tool to achieve these necessary life skills.

HOW WE TEACH IT

Shaolin Wing Chun Kung Fu recognizes that there are varying ranges to self-defense: long-range, medium-range, and short-range. When studying the tools and techniques of these ranges, an observer may compare what they see being taught to that of Taekwondo, Karate, Judo, Jujitsu, or a similar martial art.  This would in fact be somewhat accurate.  Shaolin Wing Chun categorizes and classifies all these different martial arts styles into four different toolsets: kicking, striking, trapping, and grappling; all of which are studied at Meng's Tiger Dragon. Children often prefer or excel at one toolset over another.  Meng's Tiger Dragon recognizes these strengths.  We then help the student to also recognize and use their strengths to learn and hone all the Shaolin Wing Chun life skills.

Our program has a long history of helping children reach their full potential. At Meng's Tiger Dragon, children dealing with bullying, low self-esteem/confidence, and depression/anxiety have achieved success in building the fundamental life skills necessary to challenge and overcome those issues.

COMPETITION/TOURNAMENTS

Meng's Tiger Dragon encourages tournaments as a way to pressure-test the life skills. While encouraged, tournaments are never required. Upon achieving their third belt, students will begin some in-class sparring and are given the opportunity to participate in sparring classes. Should the student decide to compete, Meng's Tiger Dragon participates in tournaments at the local, regional, national and international level. In 2023, 3 competitors from Meng's Tiger Dragon did so well at the nationals that they qualified for the PanAm games in Toronto. After some excellent matches, they came home with a bronze, 3 silvers and 1 gold! The pattern continues in 2024 with several students coming home from the nationals with multiple medals.
